Unpopular Opinion: Trends Don’t Matter (That Much)

Before I get on my soap box, let’s set some context. Trends were created for one reason — to keep us consuming. Sure, they keep our wardrobes feeling fresh, but constantly chasing trends ultimately leads to a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear (trust me, I’ve been there). At the end of the day, trends are relevant if they match your personal style and make you feel confident. Otherwise, they simply aren’t worth the investment.

If your goal a curated wardrobe that feels current, it’s critical learn how to select the right trends for you. Here’s how.

The trend filter

Personally, I love creating systems that help me keep my impulse buys in check. So, I created.a set of questions to ask before I buy into new trends:

  1. Does it align with my personal style and the aesthetic I want to create?

  2. Is it a trend I can wear in my real, everyday life? If so, can I style it with the pieces already I own?

  3. Does it work with my body type (and personal coloring — if the trend is a color)?

  4. Does it make me feel confident and authentic? Or like an imposter?

  5. Will I continue to wear it when it’s no longer trending?

As you read through these questions, you’re probably sensing a theme: we’re focused on how the trend works for you versus how you can make it work. So, the next time you feel pressured to buy something “just because it’s trending”, pause and ask yourself these questions first. If the answer to one of more of them is “no”, then you have your answer.
