It’s Time to Find Your Signature Look — Here’s How

Have you ever found yourself buying the cute top your friend wore to brunch or copying an influencer’s outfit from head-to-toe… only to realize that those pieces don’t actually go with anything you own? Girl, I’ve been there! And honestly, the biggest style mistake we make is not leaning into what we love.

Too often, we buy things without pausing to think about what we actually want our style and our wardrobe to be. The problem with this approach is that it delays the process of finding our signature look and stepping into our authentic selves. At the end of the day, impulse purchases aren’t good for our style or our wallet. So, how do you break this cycle and finally find your signature style? I’m so glad you asked!

step 1: identify your aesthetic

The easiest way to figure out what you like is to tune into what you’re drawn to consistently. Personally, I use a Pinterest board to help me identity the outfits, pieces, silhouettes and color palettes I love. But inspiration can come from anywhere — the color palette in your home, women in your life who have a style you admire, or even random people on the street. The key is to simply start noticing. For example, do you light up every time you see a crisp white button down? Are you drawn to structured or casual pieces? What are the accessories and styling details that finish the looks you love? As you start answering these questions, your aesthetic will become more and more clear.

step 2: experiment with the pieces you own

Once you’ve spent some time observing, grab a glass of wine and head to your closet. Chances are that you already own some of the pieces, silhouettes and colors you’re drawn to — so hang them front and center and create a few outfits. Consider tailoring these outfits to real life things you have to dress for… like working from home, school drop-off or girls night out. Try your outfits on (complete with jewelry, bags and shoes) and take full-length mirror photos of the ones you love. Save them in an album on your phone for your next “nothing to wear” moment.

step 3: refine and invest strategically

As you become more confident about what you like and the outfits you’re creating, it’s time to refine. Are you missing any key pieces that would help you create the types of outfits you admire? What about bags, shoes and accessories? Once you identify the gaps, create a budget and prioritize the pieces in order of the value they would add to your closet AND the events you have upcoming on your calendar. For example, a core basic can be styled multiple ways, but a statement piece may be more limiting in terms of the value it will add to your day-to-day look. That said, if you have an upcoming event that requires a statement piece and you find the perfect one, it may be worth prioritizing. You get the idea.

It’s also worth noting that simple details like how we style our hair and how we do our makeup can have a profound impact on our signature look. Do you prefer a polished blowout or air-dried waves? Do you gravitate towards natural or dramatic makeup looks? These things are also worth noticing and experimenting with over time.

why it matters

When you become clear on how to want to look, two amazing things happen: you step into our authentic self and you start filtering out the purchases that aren’t in line with how you want to show up. There is something so empowering about knowing what you love and leaning into it.
