A Cohesive Wardrobe Comes Down to These 3 Things
A cohesive wardrobe is something most women dream of— after all, the idea of opening your closet and effortlessly creating outfits you love seems so enticing. But if you’ve ever stared at a closet full of clothes and still felt like you had nothing to wear, you’re not alone. The truth is, building a cohesive wardrobe isn’t about having a perfect eye for style—it’s a skill anyone can learn. And the good news? It really comes down to just three key elements.
style consistency
The first element is style consistency. This simply means allowing yourself to like what you like—and leaning into that aesthetic when you shop and get dressed. Do you love a simple, classic look? Or do you gravitate towards bold, dramatic and colorful outfits? Are there any pieces you find impossibly chic (for me, a white button up does it every time)?
When your wardrobe reflects a clear point of view, your pieces naturally start to work together. If you’re not quite sure what your personal aesthetic is yet, don’t worry—I’ve written another post that walks you through exactly how to find it.
Color Pallette
The second element is a color palette. When most of the pieces in your wardrobe share a complementary range of colors, mixing and matching becomes almost effortless. This doesn’t mean you’re limited to neutrals —it simply means choosing colors that naturally work well together and that you genuinely enjoy wearing. Personally, I love navy, white and black as my neutrals and cobalt blue, teal and French blue as my accent colors. Even if you love patterns, sticking to a color palette will allow you to easily mix-and-match.
Over time, this creates a wardrobe where nearly everything pairs together and getting dressed becomes simpler.
Functionality
The third element is functionality. Your wardrobe should support your real life and allow you to get dressed for your everyday. Even though I would love to dress like Olivia Pope, my work-from-home job simply doesn’t require beautifully tailored suits and pumps. But, that doesn’t mean that I can’t own beautifully tailored pieces that match my lifestyle, like a pair of jeans that fits just right, a crisp white button up, and pair of perfectly crafted loafers or ballet flats. These pieces still read elegant — and they’re things I’ll actually reach for when I’m getting dressed for my real, everyday life.
If you can’t walk comfortably in your shoes, your clothes don’t suit your day-to-day activities, or pieces simply don’t fit well, getting dressed will always feel like a challenge. When your clothing is comfortable, practical, and fits your body and lifestyle, your wardrobe — and outfits — will work for you.
